We want each student from the Portuguese-speaking countries to have the chance to feel science can be for them if they so wish, regardless of the community they were born into or live in and of the socioeconomic status of their family.
Join the community of Cartas com Ciência, which has organised letter exchanges among 116 pairs of students and scientists between 2020 and 2021 in three different continents. Through our programmes, the vast majority (89%) of students has met a scientist for the first time!

Common questions
A. How much does it cost for each student to participate in a Letters with Science program?
Based on our 2020 and 2021 programs, the cost of participation for each student (during one academic year) is estimated at €20-25 if we consider that the programs are managed by volunteers, and €80-100 if account for human resources expenses. At the moment, Cartas com Ciência has only volunteers, but we would like one day the management of our programs to be ensured by paid people.

A. How much does it cost for each student to participate in a programme promoted by Cartas com Ciência?
Based on the programmes we ran in 2020 and 2021, the participation cost of each student (during a school year) is estimated between 20-25€ if we consider the programme management is taken care of by volunteers, and between 80-100€ if we take into account human resources expenses. At the moment Cartas com Ciência relies solely on volunteers but we would like the management of our programmes to be led by paid personnel in the future.
B. How will my donation be used?
Donations are used for all costs associated with the management and implementation of the letter exchange programmes, including:

Reimbursement of teachers (and scientists) in respect of expenditures related to the implementation of our programmes (such as stamps and envelopes). We work with low-income communities and our programmes are free for all participants.

Supporting our costs with online platforms to communicate with teachers and scientists, including the initial training for scientists, and to have a videocall in the end of the programme with the class and the scientists.

Supporting our costs with safe data storage. We want to guarantee the privacy of the students and scientists’ data (and letters!).

Supporting our marketing and outreach costs. We are looking for more scientists from Portuguese speaking African countries, from Timor-Leste, and from the Social Sciences.

Supporting our research costs. We want to assess the impact our programmes have on students, teachers, and scientists.
C. Am I entitled to tax benefits due to my donation?
You will receive an invoice regarding your donation. This will be issued by the Association Native Scientist, of which Cartas com Ciência is a spin-off and which is based in Braga, Portugal. Whether you can use the invoice to obtain tax benefits depends on the country you are in. You can get in touch with us.
D. How can I get my company to be involved?
